What Can Affect Measurement Accuracy? : "Stray Light"

Monochromator-type microplate readers typically use diffraction gratings as their dispersive element. Since monochromator-type readers require precise wavelength selection, stray light can significantly impact measurement accuracy. If the selected wavelength contains a lot of stray light, it acts as noise, leading to low measurement accuracy. To improve measurement accuracy, it is effective to select diffraction gratings with low stray light, in addition to designing the entire monochromator that suppresses stray light.



Shimadzu Diffraction Gratings : Low Stray Light and High Diffraction Efficiency

Shimadzu diffraction gratings are produced by precisely replicating from the master gratings with extremely low stray light which are made by the holographic exposure method. Shimadzu is also the first company to establish the technology for manufacturing blazed holographic grooves, which ensure low stray light compared to conventional mechanically ruled gratings, while maintaining high diffraction efficiency. Fabrication Process for Stable Quality  

Shimadzu gratings are made by replicating a “Master”.

A Master grating produced by a holographic exposure method that adopted the two beams interference of laser beam is called a “holographic grating” (HG). We were the first to develop the technology for manufacturing blazed holographic gratings (BHG), which, compared to conventional mechanically ruled gratings, ensure less stray light without any reduction in diffraction efficiency. This unique grating manufacturing technology was previously patented in Japan as Japanese Patent No. 1046763 and was awarded the Okochi Memorial Prize. We developed an aspherical wave exposure method that uses aspherical waves for holographic exposure method. As a result, it is now possible to custom-design gratings of excellent performance to match the characteristics of different types of spectroscopic devices.

The grating grooves are formed with resin on top of a glass substrate. A reflective coating (e.g., Aℓ) is applied to the grooves. As a result, stable manufacturing quality can be maintained. Moreover, we have also the replica diffraction grating which have passed the tests in accordance with Telcordia GR-1221-CORE for optical communication.
